The actor Chiranjeevi, who is a superstar of the South Indian film industry, has lodged a complaint against the increase of AI-generated deepfake videos portraying him in a derogatory light through various porn sites, with the Hyderabad Cybercrime Police. A case has been filed by the police under the IT Act’s sections 67 and 67A, the Indian Penal Code’s (IPC) sections 79, 294, 296, and 336(4), and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986’s sections 2(c), 3, and 4.
What did Chiranjeevi say about the vulgar deepfake video?
Chiranjeevi in his complaint mentioned that these deepfakes’ distribution has brought about heavy and unalterable damage to the personal and public image he has cultivated through hard work over the years. He stated, “These manufactured videos are being maliciously used to portray me in obscene and vulgar contexts, thereby distorting public perception and undermining decades of goodwill. Such acts not only inflict personal and emotional distress upon me and my loved ones but also mislead the general public by creating a false and defamatory narrative that contradicts my true character and public image.” Chiranjeevi urged the police to promptly start both criminal and technical inquiries into the matter’s perpetrators and to expunge the fake videos from cyberspace.
What did the Hyderabad Court say in the Chiranjeevi case?
Hyderabad City Civil Court recently granted Chiranjeevi relief through an order. The court restricted any kind of depiction of his name, image, voice, or any personal identification without consent. As per the court’s directives, no person or organization can utilize his name or identity for either commercial or personal purposes. The court recognized that the deepfakes and digital manipulation are severely damaging to Chiranjeevi’s reputation and financial interests.
A statement issued by Chiranjeevi’s lawyers stated that the court passed this order on September 26, 2025. Chiranjeevi, whose film career spans more than four decades and who has received honors such as the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, had filed this petition with the court to protect his identity. The court held that using his name or image without permission violated his personal and public image. The court ordered notices to be sent to all concerned parties and stated that anyone violating this order would face both civil and criminal action.
