Ameer Fakher Eldin’s Yunan has won this year’s Arab Critics’ Awards for European Films, presented at the El Gouna Film Festival on Oct. 18. The prize, now in its seventh edition, is organized by European Film Promotion (EFP) in collaboration with the Arab Cinema Center (ACC).

Yunan follows an exiled Syrian writer (played by Lebanese actor Georges Khabbaz) who travels to a remote North Sea island intending to end his life. But encounters with the island’s residents, including with his gruff but warm-hearted landlady (played by German screen legend Hanna Schygulla), gradually alter his outlook. Yunan film premiered in competition at this year’s Berlinale.

The film marks Fakher Eldin’s second feature following The Stranger. The director, unable to attend the ceremony in person, sent a video message thanking the jury. Producer Dorothe Beinemeier of Red Balloon Film, a long-time collaborator, accepted the award on his behalf.

Red Balloon produced Yunan together with Microclimat Film and Intramovies, with co-producers Fresco Films, Metafora Productions, and Tabi360. Intramovies is handling world sales on the film, with Mad Solutions taking distribution across the MENA region.

The Arab Critics’ Awards for European Films were launched in 2019 by EFP and ACC to promote the diversity of European cinema in the Arab world and strengthen ties between Arab film critics and European filmmakers. Previous winners include God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya (2019), Undine (2020), 107 Mothers (2021), EO (2022), Fallen Leaves (2023), and The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024). The initiative is supported by Creative Europe – the MEDIA Programme of the European Union.
