Edge of Tomorrow was a science fiction action film featuring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, directed by Doug Liman. After over a decade, there is news of a sequel being under development. Although it is considered one of the most underrated films of Tom Cruise, which developed a cult status and home media success, it was not a beast in its theatrical run. Now that the sequel is making the rounds in the media, we are going through its box-office performance during its theatrical run. Keep scrolling for more.

It is based on the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson appear in supporting roles. It also received amazing ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it 91% and the audience giving it 90%. The critics said, “Gripping, well-acted, funny, and clever, Edge of Tomorrow offers entertaining proof that Tom Cruise is still more than capable of shouldering the weight of a blockbuster action thriller,” about the film.

Edge of Tomorrow at the box office – A hit or miss?

Despite strong ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, Edge of Tomorrow failed to impress at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, Edge of Tomorrow was released in 2014, clashing with The Fault in Our Stars, and the latter emerged as the financial winner. The Tom Cruise starrer collected just $28.7 million on its opening weekend in North America. It collected $100.2 million in its domestic run.

Internationally, it did not cross the $300 million mark and ended its run at $280.8 million. Therefore, the worldwide box office collection for the film is $381.05 million. Since it was made on a $178 million budget, it did not even reach its worldwide break-even target of $445 million. The film, therefore, ended its theatrical run as a financial flop. However, it was reportedly the first Tom Cruise film outside the Mission: Impossible franchise since 2005’s War of the Worlds to pass $100 million at the North American box office. It became a success in home media and developed a cult status over the years.

Box office summary of the film

  • Domestic – $100.2 million
  • International – $280.8 million
  • Worldwide – $381.0 million
