‘The Pitt’s’ Brittany Allen Earns Emmy Nom After Self-Submitting

The Pitt guest stars Brittany Allen and Jeff Kober have been nominated for Emmys after self-submitting.

Self-submitting itself is not uncommon, but it is more uncommon to land a nomination after going through that process. Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie is another rare example of a self-submission that landed a nomination, with Christie getting a node for her role as Brienne of Tarth in 2019.

Allen scored the Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her role as Roxie Hamler, a terminally ill cancer patient who arrives at the emergency room after breaking her leg and suffering from seizures. Over the course of several episodes, Roxie makes the decision to remain in the hospital to die, rather than return home to hospice care with her two sons and husband, due to the amount of pain she is in and the burden of remaining at home. As Roxie, Allen appears in seven of The Pitt’s 15-episode second season.

“The Pitt has hundreds of performers and we simply, just strategically, can’t submit everybody. It’s just the reality. But we encourage people to self-submit and I love that she got nominated,” Casey Bloys, HBO and Max Content Chair and CEO, said when asked about Allen in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

While her character has a big emotional arc in the season, Allen brought to light the fact that she was self-submitting herself for Emmy consideration, saying in an Instagram post on June 15 that HBO did not submit her, “I’m running my own #FYC campaign!” she wrote at the time.

Kober, who played Duke Ekins, a motorcycle mechanic and friend of Wyle’s Dr. Robby, also received an outstanding guest actor nomination after self-submitting. His character appears in six episodes, as he shows up at the hospital for tests at the advice of Dr. Robby and then, crucially, helps talk Robby through his emotional breakdown that had been building up across the season and his risky motorcycle sabbatical, which others had failed to talk him out of doing.

Kober has previously won a Daytime Emmy for his role on General Hospital as Cyrus Renault, in addition to appearing in China Beach, Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead and Walker: Texas Ranger.

Allen has also previously won a Daytime Emmy for her role as Marissa Tasker Chandler on All My Children and has since appeared in several TV roles and in films including 2014’s Extraterrestrial and the 2018 film What Keeps You Alive.

In total, The Pitt landed 25 Emmy nominations, including for best drama series, and several acting nominees including Noah Wyle, Fiona Dourif, Katherine LaNasa, Sepideh Moafi, Patrick Ball, Shawn Hatosy, Gerran Howell and Taylor Dearden.

The show also scored two other guest actress nominations, with one for Tal Anderson as Becca King, sister to Taylor Deardon’s Mel King, and one for Tina Ivlev as Ilana Miller, a patient who comes to the E.R. after a sexual assault.

The Pitt also earned guest actor nominations for Ernest Harden Jr. as Louie Cloverfield, a regular patient struggling with alcoholism.
