Run to the West is one of the more unusual Korean releases of the year. This is not just because of its premise but because it was made as the country’s first AI-assisted feature film. Directed by Kang Yoon-sung of The Outlaws and Big Bet fame, the film runs a tight 60 minutes and ends on a deliberate cliffhanger. Here’s what actually happens and why it stops where it does.

What Is Run To The West About?

The film Run to the West opens at a funeral. The deceased’s two children, a daughter and her brother Jae-beom (Yang Se-jong), are gathering mourners. But almost nobody at the funeral is who they appear to be. Jae-beom is secretly a billionaire who built his fortune through illegal gambling operations in the Philippines. Jang-won (Byun Yo-han) is a National Intelligence Service officer working undercover to protect him. Scattered among the other guests are criminals hunting Jae-beom and hired extras simply there to pad out the crowd.

The funeral is interrupted when a group of hired thugs kidnaps Jae-beom, setting off a frantic car chase. The survivors from both cars wake up at some place that looks like Seoul but is completely deserted, aside from a group of grim reapers with animal heads who are actively hunting them.

This in-between realm is a space where the film roots in the Buddhist concept of the intermediate state between death and rebirth. In this realm, a soul is said to wander through visions and trials for up to 49 days before being reborn or passing on entirely. If you have watched Along with the Gods, you might be familiar with the 49-day trials.

Who Are Trapped? How Do They Survive?

The group trapped in this realm includes Jang-won, Jae-beom, Min-yeong (Kim Kang-woo), Seol-ah (Bang Hyo-rin), and Seok-tae (Lim Hyung-jun). These are the same people who were on opposite sides of a kidnapping just a few moments ago. Now, they’re forced to work together to survive, even though most of them were actively trying to kill or capture each other earlier.

The animal-headed reapers chasing them are explicitly framed as entities tasked with “cleaning up” wandering souls who don’t belong in this space. This means that the group isn’t just running from monsters; they’re running from forces trying to erase them from existence entirely before they can find a way out.

How Does Run To The West End?

Run to the West doesn’t resolve its central mystery. The film ends abruptly, mid-chase, with the survivors still trapped in the in-between realm and a far bigger threat looming. The closing moments tease the arrival of the “King of the Grim Reapers,” a figure who is set up as far more dangerous than the animal-headed hunters.

No one escapes, no one’s fate is settled, and the larger mythology of this realm is left open. It is unclear what the realm it actually wants with these specific people, and what happens if the King of the Grim Reapers catches up to them.

Why Does Run To The West End On A Cliffhanger?

Run to the West is explicitly billed as Part 1 of a larger story that director Kang Yoon-sung says he conceived roughly 25 years ago. The movie was paused due to financial constraints until this AI-assisted production model made it financially viable. The ending is built to set up a continuation rather than deliver a conclusion.

Is There A Sequel To Run To the West?

At the time of this writing, there has been no official confirmation about a sequel to Run To The West. If there is one, it should ideally be about a confrontation with the King of the Grim Reapers. If the makers follow a 60-minute pattern for the next installments, we could get two or three parts to Run to the West.
