There’s still very few details that have emerged from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s large, albeit still private, wedding weekend, but one story that has been shared involves Girls creator Lena Dunham, a close friend of the bride, and a seemingly divisive joke made during a speech.
The Daily Mail reports that Dunham gave a speech during the couple’s Thursday night smaller gathering at the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden. She reportedly joked during that speech that “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn,” which caused a slew of mixed reactions from gasping to laughing.
Given Kelce’s line of work, tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, there were NFL players in attendance throughout the weekend. After Dunham’s speech, Swift reportedly called her long-time friend a genius.
The high profile couple officially tied the knot in a ceremony at Madison Square Garden on Friday (July 3), surrounded by their family and friends. The ceremony took place at 5 p.m. ET, and the reception was expected to run as late as 4 a.m. ET on Saturday, according to a copy of a city permit. Just after the couple had married, a heavy rain began falling in New York, thought to be a sign of good luck.
Both Swift and Kelce wore custom Christian Dior Haute Couture, designed by Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of Dior women’s, men’s and haute couture collections, in collaboration with the bride and groom. It marks Anderson’s first celebrity couture wedding dress. They each wore custom Christian Louboutin shoes, fitting as Swift has long been a fan of red bottoms onstage. She finished her look off with Cartier jewelry.
Comedian Adam Sandler officiated the wedding ceremony. In lieu of a traditional wedding party, Swift and Kelce opted to have their brothers stand by their side during the nuptials. Austin Swift was the bride’s man of honor, while Jason Kelce served as the best man.
Many guests arrived to Friday’s celebration in secret — lines of black cars were seen driving into a large white tent with black curtains outside the arena’s entrance. The checkpoint provided the high profile guests a way into the venue without being spotted by some of the gathered crowds outside.
Unsurprisingly, a slew of high profile stars were still spotted arriving for the event including Jack Antonoff, Bradley Cooper, Lena Dunham, Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Jessica Chastain, Dakota Johnson, Jason Sudeikis, Benson Boone, Hugh Grant, Kelsea Ballerini, Camila Cabello, Karlie Kloss and Josh Kushner, Ethan Hawke, Zoë Kravitz, Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann, the Haim sisters, the Chainsmokers (Alex Pall and Drew Taggart), Erin Andrews, Charissa Thompson, soccer star Abby Wambach and author wife Glennon Doyle, L.A. Video screens outside of MSG announced the couple’s marriage with pink signs that read “JUST&T MARRIED.” The venue even posted a photo of the signs online, marking the first confirmation that their wedding did take place.
