The much-anticipated Broadway-style musical, ‘Kaneez,’ is all set to make its debut at the Jamshed Bhabha Auditorium in Mumbai on November 28 and 29, 2025. Produced and directed by Randhir Ranjan Roy, ‘Kaneez’ is an emotion-filled production that reimagines a true love story set in the 1920s, that crossed faith, caste, and social lines.
Based loosely on the love between Patna courtesan Tanno Bai and priest Dharikshan Tiwari, Kaneez illustrates how love can thrive in divided societies. The representation of love carries a message about the push and pull, between heart and tradition, love that transcends prejudice and time.
Siddharth Nigam, Gulki Joshi and Kirti Killedar headline the musical with a supporting cast including Jaya Bhattacharya, Sanjay Swaraj, Noyrika Bhatheja, Sunitt Razzdan, Amit Ghosh, Raayo S Bakhirta, Dev Surana, Hardik Thakkar, Vikas Tiwari and Kalyan Choudhary.
Randhir Ranjan Roy, the director of Kaneez, says, “Not only is it a story of a forbidden love, but it also questions the restrictions that society often imposes on true, genuine human connections.”
Siddharth Nigam, who plays Dharikshan Tiwari says about the story, “It’s an emotionally charged role being torn between love and tradition.” Gulki Joshi, who plays Tanno Bai says about the plot of the story, “The piece is beautiful in that it demonstrates that love can be present even when it seems to defy all odds.”
The musical should be amazing to watch and listen to, with Arunima Roy doing the dances, Chetan Chand designing the sets, and Rahul-Anjan writing the music. Shaan, Papon, Javed Ali, and Kirti Killedar are singing live! The songs mix prayers, old-style Indian songs, and regular Indian music. It’s a perfect combination that will pull at your heartstrings.
