YouTube, which is owned by Google, suffered an outage Tuesday night.

When trying to access the platform via desktop and mobile, videos wouldn’t appear to load and users were met with the message, “Something went wrong. Try again.” The platform went down at around 5 p.m. PT, but as of 6:05 p.m. PT, it appeared to be partially restored.

As a result of the outage, people quickly flooded X to share their frustrations, with #YouTubeDOWN becoming the top trending search. “How am I supposed to eat my dinner without a 40-minute video playing in the background? I’m just sitting here staring at my food like a weirdo. Fix the servers @YouTube,” one user wrote, while another one added, “YouTube is down! What is happening???”

The official X account TeamYouTube later shared regarding the outage, “If you’re having trouble accessing YouTube right now, you’re not alone — our teams are looking into this and will follow up here with updates.”

They added in an update at around 6:20 p.m. PT, “An issue with our recommendations system prevented videos from appearing across surfaces on YouTube (including the homepage, the YouTube app, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids). The homepage is back, but we’re still working on a full fix – more coming soon!”

In a final message, YouTube shared at 7:40 p.m. PT, “The issue with our recommendations system has been resolved and all of our platforms (YouTube.com, the YouTube app, YouTube Music, Kids, and TV) are back to normal! We really appreciate you bearing with us while we sorted this out.”

YouTube is one of the world’s largest online video-sharing platforms and, as of 2024-2025, has more than 2.7 billion monthly active users. The hub is known for featuring user-created videos from a wide array of genres, from talk and comedy to food and unscripted fare.

Last year, CEO Neal Mohan graced the cover of THR‘s annual Creators Issue, alongside several of the platform’s top creators. While he is a tech executive, Mohan expressed his appreciation for the creators, and it’s his “deeply personal” love of stories that keeps him engaged.

“I am a technologist, but I also love media and storytelling. I’ve been that way since I can remember, I’m a fan myself, fundamentally,” he said at the time. “Leading YouTube is a privilege where I can actually bring both those pieces together, that human storytelling and creativity and the best of technology, that’s what motivates me every morning.”
