Mortal Kombat II is the upcoming martial arts fantasy film, which will soon be released in theaters. As fans anticipate its theatrical release, all eyes are on whether this Karl Urban-starrer action-packed sequel can deliver the franchise’s biggest opening weekend. Keep scrolling for the deets.

It is the fourth film in the overall Mortal Kombat film series and the direct sequel to the 2021 reboot. The movies are based on the video game series of the same name. The upcoming sequel is directed by Simon McQuoid, with Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada reprising their characters from the previous movie in crucial roles. The Boys star Karl Urban has joined the cast, and the fans cannot wait to watch it on the big screens.

How much does Mortal Kombat II need to have the biggest debut in the film series?

According to Box Office Mojo’s data, the rebooted Mortal Kombat and the OG Mortal Kombat have the biggest opening weekends at the North American box office. To emerge as the biggest opener in the franchise, Mortal Kombat II will need to surpass the $23.3 million opening weekend benchmark set by both Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation trails behind with a $16.7 million debut.

    1. Mortal Kombat (2021) – $23.3 million
    2. Mortal Kombat (1995) – $23.3 million
    3. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) – $16.7 million

Given these numbers, the sequel should ideally aim for an opening in the $25–30 million range to comfortably claim the top spot and establish itself as the biggest debut in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

What is the plot of Mortal Kombat II?

The official summary of the film states, “The champions of Earthrealm, joined by Johnny Cage, are forced into battle against one another as they attempt to resist the rule of Shao Kahn, whose rise threatens the survival of Earthrealm and its defenders.” Mortal Kombat II will be released in the theaters on May 8.
