Prime Video is ready to show how fun science can be.

The streamer on Saturday released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestseller The Love Hypothesis. Stars Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman attended Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest, an immersive fan event taking place on Saturday in Los Angeles at nya Studios, to premiere the first look.

The Love Hypothesis, directed by Claire Scanlon, follows Olive (Reinhart), “a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia. But when she realizes her best friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) has fallen for her crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), Olive impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen (Bateman) to prove she’s moved on.”

But “what begins as a desperate act of friendship spirals into a fake relationship with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement.” The lines begin to blur for Olive and Adam, leading Olive to “test her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.”

In the short teaser trailer, Olive can be seen surprising Adam with an unexpected kiss as her friend Ahn looks on, a scene that is also depicted on the book’s cover. The two then agree to a fake relationship, aware that they’re always being watched by their peers.

“I should kiss you,” Bateman’s Adam tells Olive at one point. “Your friends, they’re watching from the balcony.”

With a STEM romance front and center, the trailer plays on Olive and Adam’s love for science by airing what sounds like an educational video explaining how molecules bond.

“Molecules stay in motion, vibrating and colliding until they find a match. And when they do, something miraculous happens. They form a bond. Isn’t science fun?” the narrator can be overheard saying in the trailer.

While talking about the film at Obsessed Fest, which was livestreamed on Prime Video’s TikTok, Reinhart and Bateman reflected on their chemistry read, their characters and what it was like bringing the popular book to life. They also poked fun at the teaser trailer leaking online on Friday, encouraging the audience to pretend like they hadn’t seen it already before showing it onscreen.

Since the film is an adaptation of Hazelwood’s book, Bateman mentioned that the book was “around set” and “always front and center” for them as they worked to faithfully translate the spirit of the story.

“We all want to see a lot more love than hate and this is that. I think it’s beautiful and hopefully feels timeless and feels like a movie you can go back and watch with your friends and swoon over,” Reinhart said of the film. Bateman shared the same sentiments and expressed how proud he was with the film: “I’m really really proud of what everyone did. I tink it’s a really beautiful film.”

Sarah Rothschild pens the screenplay with Elizabeth Cantillon producing.

Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan also star in the Amazon MGM film.

Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest fan event celebrates the streamer’s slate of Original YA titles including Every Year After, The Love Hypothesis, Elle, Off Campus, Overcompensating, Your Fault: London, The Last Sunrise, Drawn Together and more. During the one-day event, attendees will have access to exclusive first looks, live cast panels, immersive fan activations, merch, and to the “talent and creators behind the stories fans obsess over.”

The Love Hypothesis will stream globally on Prime Video on Sept. 23. Watch the teaser below.
