The Hollywood Reporter and Sportico are bringing star power and athletic excellence together in a new video franchise: THR’s Game Recognize Game.

Launching Aug. 26 in tandem with THR and Sportico’s “The Sports Issue,” the multi-episode series pairs acclaimed Hollywood talent with one of the sports superstars they most admire for a candid conversation at the intersection of fame, achievement and cultural influence. The debut installment unites Oscar winner Mahershala Ali with NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown, followed by a second episode pairing Off Campus sensation Belmont Cameli with NHL phenom Macklin Celebrini. Additional high-profile pairings are set to drop this fall.

THR’s Game Recognize Game explores the shared pressures and rewards of life at the highest levels of entertainment and sports — from fame and fandom, money and family, adversity and the cost of success to building a brand, staying motivated, setting new goals, personal splurges, secret talents and, of course, big reveals about what comes next.

Episode one brings together two masters of their domains who have become outsized cultural forces. Ali is a two-time Oscar-winner (Moonlight, Green Book) and Emmy winner (Ramy) whose credits include Leave the World Behind, Swan Song and True Detective. He next stars in the action thriller Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, debuting at The Toronto International Film Festival, and joins the second season of HBO’s Task. Before pivoting to acting, Ali was himself a high level athlete, playing Division I basketball at Saint Mary’s on a full scholarship.

Brown is a five-time NBA All-Star and the newest cornerstone of the Philadelphia 76ers. He spent the previous decade as a franchise star for the Boston Celtics, leading the team to the 2024 NBA championship and earning Finals MVP honors. Known for his explosive two-way play, Brown has also emerged as one of the league’s most multifaceted figures off the court: lecturing at Harvard, serving as a fellow at the MIT Media Lab and working as a prominent community advocate through his nonprofit organization, the 7uice Foundation.

Episode two showcases meteoric ascents, bringing together one of the most buzzy young actors and a phenom from the NHL. Cameli is the fast-rising leading man and social media sensation best known for starring as hockey heartthrob Garrett Graham in Prime Video’s breakout romance Off Campus, following roles in Peacock’s Saved by the Bell reboot and Netflix’s Along for the Ride. Celebrini is the San Jose Sharks’ 20-year-old superstar, a former No. 1 overall pick who set a franchise scoring record in only his second season and is now the highest-paid player in the NHL.

“We’ve seen the relationship between Hollywood and pro sports evolve into something much more dynamic than just celebrity fans or athlete cameos,” says David Katz, editorial director of THR. “Actors own teams, athletes are studios, and each industry increasingly impacts the other. This feels like the right moment for those at the top to share their stories.” Adds Sportico EIC Scott Soshnick, “Sports is an entertainment juggernaut and creative collaborations between the industries shape the culture. There’s no better moment to highlight the intersection of athletes and actors.”

The Hollywood Reporter is a flagship entertainment media brand, delivering unparalleled access to the industry through in-depth reporting, analysis, thought-provoking reviews, world-class photography and video, and exclusive features in its award-winning weekly magazine and dynamic website. THR is celebrated for its prestigious live events, industry-leading philanthropic, empowerment, and diversity initiatives, as well as its hugely successful video series, including the Emmy-nominated Off Script With The Hollywood Reporter. In 2025, THR earned a record-breaking 85 nominations at the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards, taking home 50 honors, including 13 first-place wins. The brand also won an American Society of Magazine Editors award for best cover. In 2026, The Hollywood Reporter reached a new milestone with 20 first-place wins at the SoCal Journalism Awards, more than any other outlet. The brand also received the Webby People’s Voice Award for best entertainment-themed website.
