The Book Of Mormon has canceled performances through May 17 after a fire broke out at the theater the morning of May 4.
However, the production says performances are “anticipated to resume” at the Eugene O’Neill Theater “in the coming weeks.” This comes after the New York Fire Department had initially said there was “substantial” damage to the fourth floor of the electrical room after responding to the fire Monday.
The production said Wednesday that the fire was limited to the follow spot booth, which houses the powerful lights trained on performers onstage, at the theater, according to the production. The exact cause of the fire is unknown.
The May 5 and 6 performances of the Broadway show were canceled immediately after the fire.
On Monday, NYFD received a call of a report of a fire at 10:03 a.m. Monday at 230 West 49th, with 63 units since responding to the scene, consisting of 192 fireman and EMS workers. The production says the building was cleared safely of personnel. One firefighter was injured while responding to the blaze.
The fire was in the electrical room between floors four and five, fire department officials said at a presser shortly after the incident. After that fire was dealt with, another outbreak was dealt with between floor five and the roof of the building that involved a lot of electrical equipment. The building was cleared of personnel but one firefighter was injured in the blaze.
The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway on March 24, 2011.
