Sony is now the theatrical home for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity.

Sony has signed a three-year agreement that will see the studio distribute Artists Equity’s theatrical films globally. Sony will finance the films and handle all ancillaries, with Artists Equity having the option to co-finance individual projects.

Said Tom Rothman, chairman-CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, “Now that Ben and Matt and their team have set their sights firmly on the high bar of the theatrical market, Sony is lucky as hell to be partnering with them. We look forward to making a bunch of hit films together.”

Added Affleck, “It’s an honor to make films for the magical dark room where we come together with strangers to project our innermost secrets onto a screen, surrendering to a story together, agreeing to share the same flickering dream. I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring movies to a global audience, with the entire expert Sony team.”

Artists Equity, run by Affleck, Damon and RedBird Capital’s Gerry Cardinale, has upcoming features that include the action movie RIP starring Affleck and Damon, and the Affleck-directed thriller Animals, both for Netflix. Artists Equity will still develop and produce features for streaming, outside of their theatrical pact with Sony.

Most recently, Artists Equity released The Accountant 2 with Amazon, with the theatrical box office bringing in $102 million worldwide. Other titles include the Doug Liman-directed The Instigators for Apple TV+ and the Bill Condon musical The Kiss of the Spider Woman, out Oct. 10 via Lionsgate.
