Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1, the much-awaited prequel to his National Award-winning hit Kantara, released on 2 October and is already making waves. One thing fans can’t stop talking about is the powerful Hindi version of the “Rebel Song” (Bole Re Kantara), sung by none other than Diljit Dosanjh. In a recent chat with News18, Rishab opened up about how Diljit came on board and revealed that their connection went much deeper than just a musical collaboration.
“I was in Kochi during post-production and wanted a singer who spoke a different language and wasn’t from Karnataka,” Rishab shared. “One morning, Diljit’s voice popped into my head but I actually forgot his name for a moment! (laughs) I knew his voice was perfect for Bole Re Kantara. Once I remembered, I told my producer and composer, and they got just as excited.”
When Rishab finally reached out, he was touched by Diljit’s response. “His manager told me Diljit had cancelled shows and even took his team to rewatch Kantara. Apparently, he’s very fond of me and the film,” Rishab said. “Within a few days, he was at YRF Studios recording the song. After the session, he asked to talk to me privately that conversation stayed with me.”
What Diljit shared next moved him deeply. “He told me watching Kantara connected with his own beliefs. Woh bhi mere jaise bahut bade Shiv bhakt hai. It felt like divine energy brought us together,” Rishab recalled.
Diljit also expressed his admiration in a heartfelt Instagram post: “Salute to this guy, man… who made the masterpiece Kantara. I have a personal connection with this film. When Varaha Roopam played in theatres, I cried in ecstasy.”
Rooted in the ancient ritual of Bhoota Kola, Kantara captured the soul of coastal Karnataka and went on to win two National Awards, Best Actor for Rishab and Best Popular Film. With Kantara Chapter 1, Rishab seems set to continue that spiritual and cinematic legacy, this time, with Diljit’s powerful voice echoing through it.
