Ranbir Kapoor in is legal soup after the National Human Rights Commission has asked the Mumbai Police and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take action against him and called for a FIR. Here’s why.
The Mumbai Police and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting have been asked by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take action against actor Ranbir Kapoor in response to a complaint regarding his appearance in Aryan Khan’s Netflix series The Ba***ds of Bollywood.
How the controversy began?
The controversy began with Ranbir’s brief appearance in a scene inside Karan Johar’s office in Episode 7 of the show. The complainant claims that his casual vaping during the sequence is a violation of the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act of 2019. The act prohibits e-cigarettes in all their forms, including their use and promotion.
NHRC calls for FIR against…
According to ANI, the Mumbai Police Commissioner and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry received a letter from the NHRC requesting an action taken report. The commission has also recommended that an FIR should be filed against Netflix, the show’s producers, and Ranbir Kapoor for “misleading the youth and glamorising a banned substance.”
What did the commission say in its letter?
The NHRC stated in its letter that the portrayal violates Sections 4 and 7 of the Act, which bans the use and promotion of e-cigarettes and hold people and businesses responsible for promoting them.
What was the scene about?
Ranbir Kapoor visits Johar’s office for a lighter conversation in the episode Picture Ka Title Hoga. Kapoor playfully holds out his hand to Sanya, a talent manager, as Johar introduces him to her, but he later clarifies that he was truly requesting the vaporiser she was holding. She graciously refuses his offer of a position for his manager after he takes a puff. Kapoor returns the vape back, however, she asks him to keep it and leaves.
The NHRC thinks that vaping without a mandatory health warning might create a dangerous precedent, especially for young viewers, even though the appearance is brief.
