Oscar Isaac Says He Isn’t So Open to ‘Star Wars’ Return at Disney Now

Disney might want to rethink any Poe Dameron plans they’ve got cooking.

Oscar Isaac, who portrayed the X-wing fighter pilot in three Star Wars films across the franchise’s sequel trilogy from 2015 to 2019, has hit out at the studio in a new piece for GQ Magazine published Monday.

Referencing the Disney-owned ABC pulling Jimmy Kimmel off the air after comments made about the assassination of far-right activist Charlie Kirk, Isaac said: “Right now I’m not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great.”

The U.S. actor continued: “But if that happens, then yeah, I’d be open to having a conversation about a galaxy far away. Or any number of other things.” An editor’s note reads that the interview with Isaac “took place two days after ABC and Disney suspended production on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in response to Kimmel’s comments about the death of Charlie Kirk.”

Kimmel’s suspension late September was prompted by an opening monologue in which he discussed the fatal shooting of Kirk days before. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” the talk show host said at the time. When he returned on Sept. 23 after five days of nationwide outrage over the decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel said through tears: “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”

Isaac was also asked about once saying he wouldn’t return to Star Wars unless he “needed another house.” On a Deadline panel in 2020, he had said the films were “not really what I set out to do” as an actor. “What I set out to do was to make handmade movies, and to work with people that inspire me,” he said.

The Frankenstein star admitted to GQ the comment was “slightly dickish… That was a real likable quote. Jesus Christ,” he said. “Y’know, people ask you things, you say stuff, you don’t really think about it that much.”

The three Star Wars movies in which Isaac starred in — The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker — made over $4.4 billion at the global box office.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein with Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz is currently streaming on Netflix. Last month, it was confirmed that Isaac will be leading season two of Beef on the streaming service.
