Nippon TV’s ‘Life’s Punchline’ Set for Hong Kong Remake

Japan’s Nippon TV and Hong Kong producer-studio MakerVille are bringing the bittersweet comedy-drama Life’s Punchline to Hong Kong with a new Cantonese-language remake set for a 2026 broadcast on ViuTV. The deal was announced on day one of Filmart, Asia’s leading film and television content market, running March 17–20 in Hong Kong.

The Cantonese adaptation will run 10 episodes at 45 minutes each and marks the first of several international remakes planned for the scripted format, the companies said.

Nippon TV’s original series, which aired in Japan in 2021, follows three young men in a struggling comedy trio who decide to disband at age 28 after a decade of chasing stardom. As their friends move into marriage and stable careers, the trio confronts a harsher reality — no savings, no prospects and the creeping sense that time has run out. Their story intersects with that of two sisters working at a diner, one of whom is a devoted fan of the group. Nippon TV said the series drew significant digital engagement, totaling nearly 14 million VOD views within 10 weeks of release.

Xinrui Yang, a distribution executive at Nippon TV, said: “We are thrilled to partner with PCCW Media to bring Life’s Punchline to Hong Kong. This story of youth and resilience resonated deeply in Japan, capturing the struggle between dreams and reality while proving that passion is never defined by success or failure — the journey itself is life’s greatest medal of honor.”

Kenneth Kam, CEO of MakerVille, added: “We are delighted to have obtained the rights to produce the Hong Kong adaptation of Life’s Punchline, and we look forward to bringing even more world-class creative content to audiences in Hong Kong.”

The Hong Kong remake will be executive produced by Lorraine Ho (Infernal Affairs, Initial D, Love in a Puff), with Loong Man Hong (Trivisa) serving as chief screenwriter and Andy Lo (Happiness, In Geek We Trust) directing.

Leading the cast is Lokman Yeung, a frontman of Hong Kong boy band Mirror, who takes the central role played in the Japanese original by Masaki Suda. The other members of the comedy trio will be portrayed by fellow Mirror member Alton Wong and Dee Ho of boy band Error, in roles corresponding to those played in Japan by Ryunosuke Kamiki and Taiga Nakano. The sisters, originally played by Kasumi Arimura and Kotone Furukawa, will be played in the Hong Kong version by Hanna Chan and Vanora Hui.

The project adds to Nippon TV’s broader push to export its IP via formats, ready-made programs and co-productions, while MakerVille — the content creation, artist management and events arm of PCCW Media — continues to expand its slate of local originals and regional adaptations for ViuTV and other outlets.
