As a Halloween treat, Neon released a trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming horror film Presence.
The movie, set to hit theaters on Jan. 24, 2025, is about a family who moves into a new house and then notices an unnerving presence in the home. To make it even more unsettling, the film is shot from the point of view of the ghost, and the camera moves throughout the house as if the viewer is following the family.
The cast’s ensemble includes Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, Callina Liang and Julia Fox. It’s produced by Julie M. Anderson and Ken Meyers and David Koepp is the screenwriter, who also worked with Soderbergh on Kimi.
In his review, The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney, praised the film’s casting, saying it “could not be better” and that Liu is “terrific” in the role of Rebekah “allowing her to show some hard edges but never making her such a monster that the marriage is questionable or preventing us from feeling for her when she suffers a crushing blow.”
Rooney continued to applaud the horror film for taking risks, “This is an enormously satisfying watch for haunted house movie fans, favoring sustained anxiety over big scares and practical effects over digital trickery,” he wrote. “The degree to which Soderbergh harnesses the mesmerizing power of visual storytelling cannot be overstated.”
Neon acquired the global rights to Presence soon after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
