Walgreens is closing stores again in 2026, and if you have been wondering whether your local pharmacy made the list, you are not alone. The drugstore chain has been in the middle of a multiyear downsizing effort since October 2024, when it announced plans to shutter roughly 1,200 underperforming locations over three years. About 500 of those closures happened in 2025 alone.

Why Is Walgreens Closing Down Stores?
The short answer is money. Walgreens has been squeezed from every direction over the past few years. Drug reimbursement rates have dropped, competition from Amazon and online pharmacies has pulled customers away from physical stores, and theft and safety concerns have made certain locations too expensive to keep open. Foot traffic at brick-and-mortar pharmacies keeps sliding as more people order prescriptions online and get them delivered the same day.
Then came a major ownership change. In 2025, private equity firm Sycamore Partners purchased Walgreens for roughly $10 billion and took the company private, ending its run as a publicly traded business. The new ownership scaled things back. Walgreens now expects to close fewer than 100 stores in 2026, down from earlier internal projections closer to 700, per Inc. The company also shut down a 500,000-square-foot distribution center in Houston and confirmed at least 628 layoffs across Illinois and Texas, according to Fast Company.
Walgreens is not the only pharmacy chain shrinking its footprint. CVS has closed more than 1,100 locations since 2022, and Rite Aid shut down entirely through bankruptcy. More than 1,400 stores across various retail chains are expected to close by the end of 2026.
