Animated movies and cartoons always remind us of childhood and give us that warm feeling. But recently the industry has started exploring mature themes as well to widen the viewer base. Whether it be by using crude jokes, hidden meanings, aesthetic illustration or a more nuanced plot and message. Netflix is known to have some of the best animated films- Klaus, Kpop Demon Hunters, Sea Beast and more.
Klaus
Klaus is an Academy award nominee. It’s about a selfish postman, Jesper, who is assigned to a distant, northern island town of Smeerensburg. He ends up forming an unlikely friendship with a reclusive toymaker- Klaus. Together they come up with a plan to bring joy and kindness to the children of the hostile community
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio reimagines the classic tale of Pinocchio with a darker narrative. Gepetto loses his son to a bombing during World War I in Italy. Twenty years later, Gepetto makes Pinocchio with the wood of the tree planted on his son’s grave. Pinocchio is brought to life in the middle of the night. This is a heartwarming story filled with ups and downs. This animated movie won the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature in 2023.
Kpop Demon Hunters
Kpop Demon Hunters follow the life of three girls who are part of the k-pop group Huntrix meant to save the world from demons. When they are close to sealing the demons away an unexpected demon k-pop group Saja Boys enters their lives.
Nimona
Nimona is an Oscar nominated sci-fi animated movie adapted from ND Stevenson’s graphic novel. The movie revolves around Ballister and Nimona. Ballister, the first commoner to become a knight, ends up killing the Queen when a laser is shot through his sword. Nimona declares herself as his sidekick ready clear his name with him.
The Sea Beast
The Sea Beast has receiver several award nominations, including Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards. The Sea Beast is a heartwarming story that tells us about Maisie Brumble, a young orphan girl ready to follow the steps of her late monster hunting parents. She sneakily joins Jacob Holland’s crew, a famous sea monster hunter.
Spirited Away
Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Ghibli Sudio is an animated movie following a young girl, Chihiro, who is determined to save her parents, who have been transformed into pigs by supernatural beings for showing greed. She comes across multiple obstacles but is helped by Haku, who found her when she was close to being found. Her extensive journey is beautiful but invigorating.
The Mitchell’s vs. The Machines
This animated film is about the Mitchells, a dysfunctional family. Their trip takes an unexpected turn when the machines start a war against humans, turning it into a robot apocalypse. The Mitchell’s end up fighting and retaliating against robots with the help of two defective robots Eric and Deborahbot 5000.
