South Korea has witnessed a wave of cyberbullying and fabricated AI allegations during the past few months. The latest spark came after actor Kim Soo-Hyun was targeted with manipulated AI content by the controversial Garosero Research Institute.
National petition
This spark has outraged the public and culminated in a national petition for the enactment of the Gaseyeon Prevention Act, aimed at curbing digital defamation, fake news, trolls, AI allegations and cyber abuse.
Gaseyeon Prevention Act
The Gaseyeon Prevention Act seeks to protect not only celebrities but also ordinary citizens from this online scandal. The petition was filed in the National Assembly in response to Kim Soo Hyun’s case and also for the tragic suicide of actor Lee Sun-Kyun in 2023, who was a victim of blackmail and slander.
Lee Sun-Kyun
In 2023, the death of the Parastite actor Lee Sun-Kyun shocked everyone, even the Korean entertainment industry. Later, the accusers were arrested on charges of blackmail and online scandal.
Petition
The petition now has over 15,800 people signed, and if it reaches 50,000 signatures within 30 days, it will be formally taken up by the Assembly and will be acted on in no time.
Garosero
The YouTube channel Garosero has been under scrutiny for spreading hate campaigns and false rumours about its targets online. According to the petition, the petition claims that online scandal has caused some serious damage to its victim and has even led to suicides due to their action. Reporter Kang Kyung-Yoon, too, faced defamatory attacks from the group.
South Korean celebrities
Many South Korean celebrities, such as singer Kim Gun-mo, broadcaster Park Soo-hong, actress Han Ye-seul, YouTuber Tzuyang, and the late Lee Sun-Kyun, were among the people of this online scandal.
Kim Soo Hyun
The recent case was Garosero’s alleged Kim Soo Hyun dating the late actress Kim Sae Ron, when she was a minor. The actor has filed a legal lawsuit against Garosero and Kim Sae Ron’s family for defamation and stalking.
