Andaz Apna Apna is one of Bollywood’s cult classic comedies. For several years, there have been rumors about a potential sequel to the 1994 film. Rajkumar Santoshi, who directed the film, has now finally spoken about the second part. The filmmaker has revealed that he has started working on a movie tentatively titled Adaa Apni Apni. Rajkumar stated that the project will be a comedy, similar to Andaz Apna Apna, but has not confirmed if it will be a direct sequel to the original film.
Rajkumar Santoshi Confirms Working On Andaz Apna Apna-Like Comedy Adaa Apni Apni
Rajkumar Santoshi recently appeared for an interview with Doordarshan, celebrating 30 years of Andaz Apna Apna. During the interview, he announced that he was writing the script for a film called Adaa Apni Apni. He explained that it would be a comedy like Andaz Apna Apna and have an experimental theme. “I am writing a comedy in Andaz Apna Apna’s style. This is the kind of experiment that you have to do, you don’t always know how it will turn out but I can assure that it will be entertaining,” Rajkumar said.
When asked if it would be a direct sequel to Andaz Apna Apna, the director neither confirmed nor denied the development. He simply replied, “It’s too early to say. Let’s see.” The project is still in the early stages of development, and it remains to be seen if the original cast members will return for the new film. In the same interview, Rajkumar also addressed Andaz Apna Apna’s dismal box office performance. Though the film has found a dedicated fan base over the years and is considered a masterpiece, it bombed during its initial release in 1994.
Citing the reasons behind the film’s poor performance, the filmmaker said, “They just say that it flopped after release. People were just not aware about it. The publicity wasn’t done in a proper way and people were not aware that this was a comedy. People thought this would be a love story like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak or Dil or Maine Pyar Kiya.” He further added, “The distributors were new so they didn’t release it properly. At the time of the release, Aamir, Salman, and me, the three of us were not in the city so there was no premiere or anything.”
