It’s a great time for fans of The Mummy franchise. On April 17, 2026, audiences will get to watch Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, a fresh reimagining of the series. Adding to the excitement, it was recently revealed that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will reunite for a fourth installment of the beloved 1999 original, which is slated to hit theaters on May 19, 2028. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures brought The Mummy Returns back to theaters last week to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Even after 25 years, many moviegoers are turning up to experience it on the big screen.

    25th Anniversary Re-Release Domestic Collection & All-Time Rank

Following its 2026 re-release, the sequel earned $0.6 million over the March 27-29 weekend, followed by another $0.1 million on Monday across 1,430 North American theaters. This has taken its cumulative domestic total to $202.7 million, placing it among the top 250 highest-grossing films of all time domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. Combined with its $241.3 million overseas haul, the film’s worldwide gross now stands at $444 million.

As the fantasy action-adventure continues its theatrical run, it is now less than $1 million away from surpassing the domestic total of the Brad Pitt-led action-horror hit, World War Z (2013). Here’s how much The Mummy Returns needs to earn to outgross it at the domestic box office.

The Mummy Returns vs. World War Z – Box Office Comparison

Here’s how the two films stack up at the global and domestic box office, according to data from Box Office Mojo:

The Mummy Returns – Box Office Summary

    • North America: $202.7 million
    • International: $241.3 million
    • Worldwide: $444 million

World War Z – Box Office Summary

    • North America: $202.8 million
    • International: $337.7 million
    • Worldwide: $540.5 million

Although World War Z leads overall in worldwide earnings by a wide margin of $96.5 million, the competition with The Mummy Returns at the domestic box office is now extremely close. After earning approximately $0.7 million so far during its 25th anniversary re-release, the Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz starrer is currently just $0.1 million short of surpassing Brad Pitt’s action-horror in North America. Even if the film continues its run for the remaining week until April 2, it appears well-positioned to close this relatively small gap and outgross it soon. However, the final outcome should become clear within the next few days as the re-release run concludes.

What’s the Plot of The Mummy Returns?

Directed by Stephen Sommers, the sequel follows Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn O’Connell (Rachel Weisz) as they return to action when Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) is resurrected once again, this time trying to take control of the Scorpion King’s army. When their son Alex is kidnapped, the couple travels to Egypt to stop Imhotep before he becomes indestructible.
