Oscar winner and veteran actor Gary Oldman will return to the British stage in Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape at the York Theatre Royal next spring.

Oldman, currently the star of AppleTV+ hit Slow Horses, will head back to where he began his career, having first performed at the northern England theater 45 years ago in Ben Travers’ Thark.

Famed for his roles in Darkest Hour, the Harry Potter franchise and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, the award-winning actor is considered a U.K. great of the film and TV industry.

His performances on stage include the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and the London production of Cabaret. His last theater appearance was nearly four decades ago, in 1987 with London Royal Court’s Serious Money.

York Theatre Royal CEO Paul Crewes said on Wednesday: “When Gary visited us at the beginning of the year, it was fascinating hearing him recount stories of his time as a young man, in his first professional role on the York Theatre Royal stage.”

“In that context when we started to explore ideas, we realised Krapp’s Last Tape was the perfect project. I am very happy that audiences will have this unique opportunity to see Gary Oldman return to our stage in this brand new production.”

The production begins previews on April 14 and runs until May 17, 2025.

Irish playwright and Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett, who died in 1989, has long been considered one of the most creative literary minds of his age. Krapp’s Last Tape follows a man who, each year on his birthday, records a new tape reflecting on the year gone by. On his 69th birthday, Krapp, now a lonely man, is ready with a bottle of wine, a banana and his tape recorder.

Tickets will start at £25 and be made available for public booking on Nov. 16.
