Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty’s husband, Raj Kundra, is once again embroiled in legal trouble. Amid a Rs 60 crore lookout notice case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against him in the Bitcoin scam. The ED claims that Raj Kundra is not merely a mediator but the beneficial owner. It alleges that he possesses 285 Bitcoins, currently valued at approximately Rs 150.47 crore. He received these Bitcoins from Amit Bhardwaj who is considered as the mastermind of the crypto scam.
What is the chargesheet filed by ED against Raj Kundra?
The chargesheet states that Kundra deliberately concealed crucial evidence, such as wallet addresses, and failed to surrender the Bitcoins. The agency states that Raj Kundra continued to use these Bitcoins and has proven them to be illegally acquired. It also alleges that he entered into a secret transaction with his wife, Shilpa Shetty, in which he attempted to conceal the true source of the funds by showing a value significantly lower than the market rate. The ED says Kundra tried to make this money appear legitimate by layering funds.
What is the Bitcoin scam of Raj Kundra?
This money laundering case is linked to FIRs filed by the Maharashtra and Delhi Police, which uncovered a Ponzi scam called Gain Bitcoin. Amit Bhardwaj and his family were accused of taking large sums of money from investors and promising them high returns.
According to the charge sheet filed by ED, Raj Kundra admitted receiving 285 Bitcoins in five separate installments and remembers the number even after seven years. The ED said that despite repeated opportunities since 2018, Kundra never provided his wallet addresses. Kundra argued that his iPhone X was damaged, preventing him from obtaining the information. The ED described this as a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence. In addition to Raj Kundra, businessman Rajesh Satija is also named in the charge sheet in this case.
