Disney+, TV Azteca in Mexico Strike Free-to-Air Broadcast Content Deal

Walt Disney‘s streaming service Disney+ is expanding its content offering in Mexico through a new agreement with TV Azteca in its latest content partnership with a free-to-air broadcaster. Under the deal, financial details of which were not disclosed, the upcoming season of TV Azteca‘s MasterChef 24/7 will be available on Disney+ from May 17.

TV Azteca joins a group of free-to-air broadcasters that Disney+ has started working with in the form of content partnerships, including XSports in Brazil, Atresmedia and RTVE in Spain, ITVX in the U.K., ARD and ZDF in Germany, SIC in Portugal, and TVING in Japan.

Newly minted Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro recently outlined his vision to make Disney+ the “digital centerpiece” of the company. Last year, Karl Holmes, general manager for Disney+ EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), emphasized the win-win aspect of content deals with broadcasters. “The big free-to-air channels still aggregate the largest audiences, have the largest shows, and have the largest production budgets,” he said. “It’s really important we do work with free-to-air. So we license content to free-to-air. We license content from free-to-air. We have co-production agreements in place with most of the large free-to-air broadcasters across Europe.”

The  Mexican collaboration, which builds on the existing relationship between the two companies on reality shows  La Academia (2024) and La Granja VIP (2025), which have been on Disney+, will also include “other reality formats to be confirmed soon,” the partners said.

“As audiences continue to evolve, Disney+ is continuously expanding its content offering,” said Henri Ringel, senior vp, acquisitions & content sales at the Walt Disney Company Latin America. “The integration of new formats, such as reality shows from Azteca’s network, reflects this evolution and the need to offer stories that unfold live and are highly engaging, thereby strengthening our value proposition.”

As part of this agreement, Disney+ said it also recently added three live channels from TV Azteca International, namely Azteca UNO -1, Azteca Deportes Network, and Corazón, “bringing together a diverse slate of local fiction and non-fiction content, sports events and news, and entertainment programming to subscribers in Mexico” in a single destination.

“At Disney+, we are committed to offering a broad and diverse portfolio of content that resonates with different audiences in Mexico,” said Luis Arvizu, senior vp, general manager & gead of DTC at the Walt Disney Company Mexico. “Proven reality formats, live linear channels, and a variety of content give us the opportunity to continuously deliver compelling entertainment options within the platform.”

Additional TV Azteca content that will become available on Disney+ beginning in May under the content partnership are the likes of telenovelas Mirada de Mujer, Cuando seas mía, and La Loba, as well as all seasons of Doctora Lucía and Lotería del Crimen.
