Diane Keaton‘s cause of death has been revealed days after the Hollywood icon died at age 79.

The Oscar winner’s family told People magazine that she died from pneumonia on Oct. 11. “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” they wrote in a statement.

“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” Keaton’s family also shared of her passions.

Keaton was known for her roles in Annie Hall, three Godfather films, Something’s Gotta Give, Reds, Marvin’s Room, two Book Club movies and two Father of the Bride films, among dozens of other films. In addition to her one-of-a-kind onscreen presence, she also regularly made style statements both on and off screen, showing women how to seamlessly blend fashion and identity.

Following the news of her death, tributes poured in from her friends, former co-stars and fellow actors, including Bette Midler, Francis Ford Coppola, Kate Hudson, Steve Martin, Jane Fonda, Nancy Meyers and Octavia Spencer, among others.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief film critic, David Rooney, wrote in his critics appreciation for the actress, “With her sheer, undiminished magnetism alone, Keaton remained a feisty rebuke to that kind of ageism in Hollywood. Her vitality was unextinguishable. We are fortunate to have shared so much of her life.”
