Even though it’s bittersweet for Stephen Colbert as he nears the end of The Late Show, Jon Stewart quite literally lifted the host’s spirits on Tuesday. During Stewart’s visit to the CBS late night talk show for his final guest appearance, he brought Colbert a gift, previewing the host’s new life once The Late Show ends on May 21. “Everybody has been coming up with a bit to sort of end their thing. They sang you a song. They wrote you a poem. They did all that. I am not talented, so I’m not doing any of that,” The Daily…

Austrian auteur Sandra Wollner’s haunting second feature, The Trouble With Being Born, was an impressive genre-bending thriller that played like an episode of Westworld directed by Michael Haneke. Quietly mesmerizing and altogether demented, it told the story of a child robot who finds herself in the care of a man with major — and I mean MAJOR — issues. It’s not worth spoiling that movie, which is currently available on Mubi and definitely deserves a look. Wollner’s follow-up, Everytime, isn’t worth spoiling either, although one of the problems with this mildly intriguing family saga is that the spoilers arrive too…

A biopic chronicling the early life of legendary rockstar Billy Joel is in the works, though the piano man himself isn’t affiliated with the project, and he’s calling out the film as “both legally and professionally misguided.” John Ottman, who edited the recently released Michael, is directing Billy & Me, and Adam Ripp is writing the screenplay. I’m not a cord-cutter, yet — the economics of internet-only packages still don’t make sense — and I, like you (probably), abhor the fragmentation of sports that has exploded through streaming. The extraneous subscriptions required, never quite knowing what game will be on where, and sometimes even getting subpar presentations of games and matches — I’m looking at you here, Netflix — feels like the opposite of having died and gone to sports heaven, which was the original sales pitch for ESPN. That’s ESPN, the linear cable channel, not ESPN+ and not the new ESPN app. But I must say,…
