THIS Bollywood actress gained a lot of popularity with her exceptional performances in films. In the 1960s, there was one actress who continued to find success after her marriage and children. The diva started her successful career at the age of 15 and got married the same year. Two years later, at the age of 17, she became a mother. Can you guess who it is?
We are talking about Moushumi Chatterjee who was born Indira Chatterjee in 1952. She made her debut as a child artist in the 1967 Bengali film Balika Badhu. She became an overnight star as she managed to win hearts with her roles. She wanted to continue her studies and upon her family’s request, she married Jayant Mukherjee. Jayant is the son of renowned Indian music director and singer Hemant Kumar.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, the actress revealed why she got married early and said, “My father was very close to my elder sister, who was in the final stages of cancer. Her last wish was to see me married. That’s when my father-in-law suggested that we should get married. I had to give up my exams, and at the same time, I got a film offer. Everything was falling into place”. She further added saying, “At 17, I became a mother. I got my own Mercedes. I didn’t even know what success meant at that time. I was just happy to see my face on the big screen”.
Moushumi became one of the highest-paid actresses in Bollywood in 1970s. She played the role of Sunny Deol’s sister-in-law in Ghayal, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Reportedly, Sunny arrived late to the set and was seen browsing on his phone. This left Moushumi annoyed and she scolded him. Moushumi told him not to tarnish his father Dharmendra’s reputation and he apologized to her.
Reportedly, she was removed from several films and she once said that she was replaced in Desh Premi and Barsaat Ki Ek Raat which starred Amitabh Bachchan. She concluded by saying, “I was signed for them, but then I was removed from the films. I never compromise. I was expected to always say ‘yes’ to everything, but I couldn’t do that.”
