Singer, composer, pionist Adnam Sami officially became an Indian citizen in the year 2016. He is best known for songs like Tera Cherra, Lift Karade, Bhardo Jholi Meri and many more. He recently appeared on Aap Ki Aadalat and spoke at length about his journey and more. He even opened up on a deeply emotional moment in his life. He revealed that after he gave up on his Pakistani citizenship, he was denied visa to travel to the country for the last rites of his mother.
In an interview with Rajat Sharma on Aap Ki Aadalat, Adnan Samiwas asked whether he has ever travelled to Pakistan after becoming an Indian citizen in the year 2016. He then revealed about his visa getting denied by Pakistani authorities in 2024 when his mother, Begum Naureen, passed away. He mentioned that his mother did not have any prior health issue and thus, her demise came as a shocker to all. He applied for the visa and the Indian authorities granted him the necessary permissions. He said, “Maine yaha ki sarkaar se pucha main jana chahta hu toh apko koi objection to nahi. Unhone kaha, ‘Zahir hai, aapki maa ka inteqal hua hai, aapko zaroor jana chahiye’. Unki taraf se koi problem nahi tha. (I asked the Indian Government if there was any objection with his travel to Pakistan and they said there is no problem as my mother has passed away and I should surely go.)
However, he explained that he then had to watch the funeral over a video call as his visa got rejected by Pakistan. “I applied for a visa and told them my mother had passed away. Still, they refused. I couldn’t go. I watched the entire janaza through a WhatsApp video call,” he said.
In the same interview, he clarified that he did not move to India for financial benefits. Rather, he said that he was lucky to be born in a wealthy family and that he left behind a lot of property to move to India.
