What’s Good: The focus on the lore and the stories of the demons keeps being entertaining, and that’s the best thing about the series.

What’s Bad: The film definitely falls into the repetition that the series is known for, which is understandable, as already six movies in, it must be hard to come up with new, fresh takes.

Loo Break: The movie is not that long, so there is very little room for a loo break, but if you need to, go right at the end of the first act.

Watch or Not?: This is not a must-watch in theaters, but it could be a fun movie to watch at home on a weekend.

Jason Blum is the king of horror in this 21st century, and his production company doesn’t stop, especially when it comes to the Insidious franchise, which just three years ago released what could have been the end of the story, and it was, at least for some of the characters, but not the end of the franchise, as he clearly intends to continue it as long as it can, and now we are greeted with “Out of the Further” a new installment that focuses more on the lore of the series than anything else, but is that enough to keep audiences happy?

Insidious: Out of the Further Movie Review: Script Analysis

Jacob Chase takes the reign of the franchise for this installment, and the director uses his experience in the horror genre to focus a lot more on what is behind, which in this case means a very diverse collection of demons, and dark entities that live somewhere beyond our perception but always at reach, with Chase taking the role of screenwriter as well as director, there is definitely consistency within the story telling.

Chase chooses Elise, a recurring character in the series as his anchor, and it works pretty well, because by this point, Lin Shaye’s character has definitely become the face of the franchise, and audiences have attached to her in ways that not even Patrick Wilson’s character did in the previous films.

He also introduces a new character to the scene, Gemma, which becomes a sort of apprentice to Elise, as she develops her own special abilities that she uses to interact with the dark entities from beyond the further, and the relationship between the two becomes the main character focus, and while it is nothing that we haven’t seen before, it is solid enough to make us care about Gemma as a character and hopefully want her to appear in future sequels.

Chase also takes his time to give the demons their own story spotlight and each actor really seizes the opportunity, with some backstories being truly fascinating, especially that of Cyrus, the main the demon of this installment, a great villain with a great look, and yes, none of the dialogue or plot twists will make you mind explode but the combination of tropes and the plot developments are enough to make the film a good time.

Insidious: Out of the Further Movie Review: Star Performance

Amelia Eve, Lin Shaye, and Sam Spruell are the stars of the show, especially Shaye who has basically taken control over the franchise and I think it can be already be put in the pantheon of best horror characters of all time, her presence is welcome, and it is nice to have a recurring character like her connecting most of the films.

Amelia Eve being the newcomer also works very well, especially because her character has very cool abilities, and she can explore those while also dealing with the consequences of them, making the character interesting to watch, but it is Spruell who steals every scene he is in with his performance as a demon who is quite charismatic, a bit too much maybe, but makes for a great villain, and screen presence.

Insidious: Out of the Further Movie Review: Direction, Music

Chase is still new to the game in terms of commercial filmmaking, but you can definitely feel like he knows what he is doing, even if there is still some polishing to do regarding every aspect of the filmmaking, especially when it comes to composition and camera work, but these can be improved greatly in future film, but as it is, he can be proud he made a very solid film that fits in the franchise quite nicely.

Visual effects are what they are, don’t expect seeing the best CGI in the market here, but what there is works well, it could be better, but that would mean a lot more money, and one of the big reasons why we keep getting these films is that they are very cheap in comparison with most commercial films out there, so let’s keep that budget in check.

Insidious: Out of the Further Movie Review: The Last Word

Insidious: Out of the Further is not the best film in franchise, and not even the best horror film of the year, but it is a solid addition to the franchise, especially if you are interested in the lore and want to meet more of the very interesting creatures that franchise has to offer, along with solid performances and just an entertaining story as well, it might not be a must-watch but it is worth watching it.

Insidious: Out of the Further released on 21st August, 2026.
