The South Korean series Bloodhounds premiered on Netflix in 2023. It was one of those stellar action shows on Netflix that delivered on premise, thrills, and a humane touch to the story. It follows two young men who bond over boxing and fight injustice. Season 1 of Bloodhounds was a great success, and now, three years later, its sequel is being released on Netflix. Bloodhounds season 2 brings back the two protagonists and a new nemesis. Before the next season premieres, here’s a look at the first season to get you up to speed.
What Happened In Bloodhounds Season 1?
Bloodhounds follows Gun-woo (played by Woo Do-hwan), an aspiring boxer who fights in the rings to bring money and aid for his single mother. Unbeknownst to him, his mother borrows money from a loan shark, and thus, the trouble begins. The antagonist in season one of Bloodhounds is Smile Capital, a shady money-lending institution. It is headed by Kim Myeong-gil.
Gun-woo meets Woo-jin, a former soldier turned boxer, and the two become unlikely friends. They come together to fight against Smile Capital. The fight was nothing short of a psychological, physical, and emotional war on all fronts from Gun-woo and Woo-jin. They get help from Tae-ho, a former loan shark who now lends money to people without any interest. He turns out to be an angel in disguise for the two men fighting against Smile Capital. He hires Gun-woo and Woo-jin as bodyguards for his adoptive daughter. The daughter is also investigating Smile Capital. In the finale of Bloodhounds season 1, Myeong-gil is beaten unconscious by Gun-woo, and it is fair to assume that Myeong-gil won’t return to trouble Gun-woo again.
Why Do Bloodhounds Appeal To The Masses?
Bloodhounds tells a thrilling tale of getting back what is rightfully yours and putting everything on the line to protect it at all costs. It is relatable because the characters develop significantly throughout the show. The protagonists’ struggle draws on a reality in our world. What is worth noting here is that boxing and its many forms take center stage in Bloodhounds during the action sequences. Gun-woo’s and Woo-jin’s boxing skills help them win not only in the ring but also outside of it. When push comes to shove, they use their skills to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Another interesting thing to note here is that the show’s title, “Bloodhounds,” is reflected in the characters who become the namesake animals, resorting to violence to seek vengeance for the blood spilled. Season 1 of Bloodhounds ends with Gun-woo and Woo-jin returning to boxing, bearing the scars of the past.
Bloodhounds 2: Plot & Release Date
Veteran K-pop star Rain is making a comeback to the small screen as the antagonist Baek Jeong. Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi will reprise their roles as Gun-woo and Woo-jin. Bloodhounds season 2 will bring Gun-woo and Woo-jin face-to-face with Baek Jeong, an underworld boss in charge of illegal boxing rings. The two were leading an honest life, earning their keep by fighting legally. But Baek Jeong stirs trouble for them, which once again pushes them to the ledge. As the two face Baek Jeong, they once again face a dilemma between fair and unfair boxing practices and corrupt power. Bloodhounds 2 is set to release on Netflix on April 3, 2026, with 7 episodes.
