Bollywood has seen many actors who married more than once, and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt is also one of them. He was first married to Lorraine Bright (later known as Kiran Bhatt) and had two children, Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt. Later, he fell in love with actress Soni Razdan, who became his second wife. Soni, known for her strong performances in the 1980s and 1990s, stepped away from the spotlight after marriage.
Her Early Life and Background
She was born on October 25, 1956, in Birmingham, England, Soni Razdan comes from a multicultural family, her father was a Kashmiri Pandit and her mother was German-British. Embracing both cultures, Soni later converted to Islam to marry Mahesh Bhatt, who was nine years older and already had two children from his first marriage.
Journey Into Acting
Soni’s love for acting began early. She started her career with English theatre and later appeared in the English film The Collector in the 1970s. Her performance in the Bengali film 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981) earned her praise, and that same year, she made her Bollywood debut with Ahista Ahista. Over the next couple years, she gave memorable roles in films like Mandi (1983), Saraansh (1984), Trikaal (1985), and Khamosh (1986). She also became a household name through the TV serial Buniyaad (1986).
Career Slowdown After Marriage
However, after marrying Mahesh Bhatt, Soni’s career took a back seat. In an interview, she revealed that at that time, married actresses often stopped getting film offers, and she faced the same fate. As soon as news of her marriage spread, work opportunities dried up.
Unable to find film roles, she turned to television, where she continued to act for some time before eventually stepping away from the screen.
Comeback and Recent Work
Years later, Soni made a comeback in 2011 with Monsoon Wedding and gained attention once again when she appeared alongside her daughter Alia Bhatt in the film Raazi (2018).
