The Goonies Lego Set Will Recreate the Classic Movie

Goonies never say die, but they do, apparently, say Lego.

The brick toy company officially unveiled a 2,912-piece building set based on The Goonies, the beloved 1980s adventure movie directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg.

A diorama model of the pirate ship from the movie serves as basis for the set, which takes builders and observers on a trip through the movie via its many rooms. There are brick-built recreations of memorable scenes, from the Fratellis’ hideaway to boulder traps to the Bone Organ to One-Eyed Willy’s treasure room.

The set comes with 12 minifigures, including Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, Andy and Data. Per the company, brand-new elements were designed for Sloth’s pirate hat and bandana, and Mama Fratelli’s hair and beret. The set will be 18 cm in width, 62 cm in length, and 36 cm in height.

In making the announcement, Lego brought out Ke Huy Quan, the Oscar winner who famously played Data, for a nostalgic mini-film, in which the actor guides viewers through the set and its easter eggs.

Quan additionally recalled how the Inferno ship was kept secret from the cast and that the door to the set was guarded by security so the actors couldn’t sneak in. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Quan said, “When the time came to film the reveal, they had us walk in backwards in a line, then get into the water with our backs to the ship the entire time. There were seven cameras rolling, one on each of us – to capture our reaction as we saw the Inferno for the first time. Only Josh (Brolin) had to film a re-take, as he let out a curse in excitement the first time around!”

The set hails from the Lego Ideas division, which gives fan-generated sets a chance to get made by the company through a voting system. The Goonies set was submitted by Greece-based 3D artist and fan sesigner, Vaggelis Ntezes, whose Lego Ideas name is Delusion Brick.

“In designing this set, I revisited my childhood memories – growing up in the ’80s, playing with LEGO Pirates sets and watching The Goonies,” said Ntezes in Lego’s announcement. “Combining nostalgia, fantasy, and creativity, I wanted to build something that offered both playability and display value. The final design merges the legendary Inferno with the cave system and booby traps, capturing the spirit of adventure that made the film so unforgettable.”

The Goonies set will be available via Lego’s early access program Nov. 1 then hit stories Nov. 4. The price will be $309.99.

Additionally, shoppers who purchase the set up to November will receive a bonus Goonies set: LEGO Ideas The Goonies: The Walsh’ Attic. That 179-piece set recreates the scene in which the kids discover the treasure map in the attic of the Walsh family. Replete with details from the attic scene, it also comes with minfigs of the parents Irving and Irene Walsh.

Goonies is one of the classic 1980s movies that has endured over the decades and even grown in stature as subsequent generations discovered its sassy but innocent appeal. Written by a young Christopher Columbus and directed by Donner, already a Hollywood vetertan director who would soon go on to helm the Lethal Weapon movies, the story focused on a group of rejects in Astoria, Oregon who try to save their family homes by finding lost pirate treasure.

The cast featured the screen debut of Brolin and also starred Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green and Quan as the kids while Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, and Joe Pantoliano starred as the bumbling crime family, the Fratellis. John Matuszak played the outcast family member known as Sloth.

The movie consistently shows up in the top of HBO Max, the streaming service run by Warners Bros. Discovery (Warners released the movie in 1985), and Astoria has become a tourist destination thanks to the movie. Warners is currently developing a sequel to the movie.
