More than twenty years ago, an unexpected clash grabbed headlines when Salman Khan allegedly approached Hotmail founder Sabeer Bhatia over his comments about Aishwarya Rai.
At least two decades ago, a rendezvous of Bollywood icon Salman Khan and Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia was one of the most widely reported events. Aishwarya Rai, the queen of Bollywood’s beautiful actresses was the cause of the hype. Sabeer Bhatia’s lavish talks about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan detonated the media to a great extent; a quarrel between the two turned out to be quite interesting. During the late 90s, when Aishwarya Rai was nearly ruling the world of cinema, Bhatia, an Indian-born entrepreneur and Hotmail founder, had already become a prominent figure in the Silicon Valley. As per the reports he, at one time, even proclaimed that he would marry Aishwarya. He likened her to a flower of such beauty that every man desires her and that she is a goddess. This was meant to be fun, yet the media group handled it in such a way that they occupied it with rumors about an affair between Aishwarya and Bhatia.
Salman Khan and Sabeer Bhatia’s Meeting
Eventually, this rumor got round to Salman Khan who at that time had the beautiful Aishwarya Rai as his girlfriend. An old report from Times of India mentions that the event took place in 2001 at a celebrity-filled party where Salman and Sabeer Bhatia were both present. Salman straight away asked Bhatia, “So you’re the guy who wants to marry Ash?” Bhatia was shocked to hear this and told that the media had twisted his words. He tried to relax by joking but Salman just smiled and said, “She’s a very nice girl.”
The atmosphere during the conversation was light, but one incident caught everyone’s attention. While they were posing for a photo, Salman stepped in between a woman standing next to Bhatia and placed his hand on her shoulder. In doing so, his cigarette hit Bhatia’s hand, and the ashes fell on his hand. When Bhatia brushed off the ashes, Salman smiled and said, “Oops. Finally, you’ve got ‘ash’ on your hands.” The joke was referring to Aishwarya. This became a topic of discussion among everyone present at the party.

Salman and Aishwarya’s relationship later broke up in 2002, and their last film, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, was released that same year. Aishwarya later married actor Abhishek Bachchan and they have a daughter, Aaradhya. Sabeer Bhatia continued his journey in the tech world, but this ‘ash’ incident is still considered one of the most interesting stories in Bollywood and the tech world.
