Before Tumbbad 2, lets revisit the cinematic masterpiece that started it all

It has been seven years since Sohum Shah gave us a visually staggering cult classic that defied genres, Tumbbad. The film mixed up the lines between reality, mythology, and morality. As there are conversations about Tumbbad 2 being released, here’s a look at what made the original film work so well.

The plotline is derived by the very things that make us human

A world as immersive and distinct as Tumbbad has been made up by very few films. The film is rooted in mythology, and it tells the story of things that are inherent to humanity as we know it, things like gods, gold, greed, and wealth. The ever-wet village wasn’t just a backdrop to build a story on; it was instead a living, breathing character in itself.

Sohum Shah’s vision made the film shine

The way Sohum Shah acted in the film, it was hard to believe that he was not living the life of his character himself. With numerous creative stagnations and unrelenting perfectionism, the film took six years to make. Sohum Shah’s unrelenting hardwork and his unstaggering faith in the project are what saved the film from turning into a forgotten experiment.

Visuals that redefined the way Indian cinematography works

Indian horror rarely seemed this poetic before Tumbbad came out. Every single scene, from the cold dark raining village to the warm glowing gold, felt like a painting. With his cinematography, Pankaj Kumar has truly set an example for filmmakers around the globe.

The sound production made you live the story

Ajay-Atul’s haunting sound effects, with a holistic and environmental sound atmosphere, made sure that the horror for Tumbbad went beyond just jumpscares. The sound and music of the film weren’t just heard by you; you lived it. It crawled under your skin, inside your nerves, and made you feel like you were a part of Hastar’s womb.

Took Indian folklore to an international level

The film premiered at Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, making it go beyond just a genre film. India’s most bold visual experiment, it was applauded for its stunning looks all over the world. Tumbbad made sure that in the world of horror films, India would walk with its head held high.

    Tumbbad’s story still stands true

At the core of it, Tumbbad wasn’t just a film about monsters and gods; it was a film about humanity. It was about us, our insatiable greed, and our inability to stop wanting more. It has been seven years since the release of the film, and even today, the film serves as a mirror for our reality, and that fact is still more haunting than any other horror element of the film.

Tumbbad 2 is on the making

After seven years of reshaping the way Indian folklore horror works, the filmmakers are all set to revisit the myths and stories of Hastar. Actor-producer Sohum Shah has confirmed that Sohum Shah Films is collaborating with Pen Studios, led by Jayantilal Gada, for Tumbbad 2. The sequel promises to go deeper; deeper in the myths, deeper in the horror, deeper in the visuals, and deeper into Hastar’s womb.
